Pushing the envelope for contemporary public artworks through new mural program
The newly-established mural collective, Color of Future, is made up of twenty professors and students from The National Institute of Fine Arts in Laos. Initially, two professors attended the Arts Incubator workshop, and leveraged the knowledge and processes they learned to engage their students in launching the mural collective. What makes this endeavor even more special is that in traditional Laos arts culture, it is uncommon for groups of artists to collaborate on a single work, much less co-develop a work that addresses a social issue.
While attending David Burke’s workshop, the two professors immediately began research to establish future projects as they continued to absorb each step of creating a large-scale mural. Together, they engaged the students in the hands-on mural-making process, taught them the collaborative art-making skills they learned from David, voted on a logo design, and even established the collective formally within the curricula of The National Institute of Fine Arts.
